Vegas lock
« on: June 11, 2018, 04:42:51 AM »
This pair of locks are what I'm calling my Vegas locks.
Cumulative hourly, with only a single red.  If you hit the red first, you can be out in an hour.  But there are also 10 double ups. If the red's already gone, there's nothing to double.  But if it's not....
Of course, just like Vegas, the odds favour the house, so you could end up with hundreds of reds and be locked for weeks.

Or you could get lucky.

I won't be adding any cards to these locks, as the fun is all in the luck of the cards.  Since they're cumulative, you'll not miss time for sleeping, unless you hit a double up in your banked chances.  Emergency keys are also enabled;  these locks are a bit too risky to deny that option completely, although if you wanted to deny it to yourself.....  ::)

Are you willing to gamble?

VegasRed is just a single red, 2 greens (both required), and the double ups.
VegasYellow adds a little more risk by tossing in a single yellow, too.

Great idea for a lock!

It'll only go up to 17 hours. Changing it to two reds won't help as it could go to 2 years. However if you have 2 reds and 7 doubles, it'll go for almost 2 weeks and 8 doubles mean a little over 6

I wanted to give it a try. I loaded the lock with the red card (I want to try the yellow one too).

This is my first shared lock, so I was excited, but I pick up a card and It was ... the red card  :o
I think it will finish in a hour  ;D

@devilishlyjasmine I believe the VegasRed lock last would last around 6 weeks if you revealed all of the double ups first. I don't know how to write the formula but the number of reds would double up 10 times i.e. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024.

1024 hours is about 6 weeks.

However I'm not sure the reds would double up past 399. If it does cap at 399 it'll be about 2 weeks.

Where do you get the divide by 60? It's not a pick a card every minute lock.

Kevin's right: 2^10 = 1024 red cards /24 hours = 42.7 days.
He's also right that double ups don't take it over 399, but chances are if you have 200 reds, you're going to hit a lot of those before the next double up, probably taking you down below 100 reds, then doubling you up again....and again....and again.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't take you to the full 42 days, but it could be a lot more than 17 hours.  I'm guessing the average would probably be somewhere around the 1-2 week mark (lucky bastard sub259 notwithstanding...  ;D ), but I guess we'll find out as more people do the lock.

Ok, my estimate of how long this lock would last is way off.

For VegasYellow, the longest lock so far is just shy of 15 hours (still locked, but inactive for over 4 hours), and 3 were out in under 9.  Shortest was 2 hours.
VegasRed has only been used by one person, sub259, who drew the red first, so was out in 2.25 hours.

I guess I need to tweak them to be a little more friendly to the house.....

I did this lock this morning and got free after just a few hours. I loaded it again and don't think I will be that lucky. This is a good one it could be a few hours or weeks.

You're right it's R*2^Y/168. R is reds, Y is yellows

It's a good lock, 24 hours in 75 reds or yellows left, one green required, 5 double ups left.
The last green is now 1 in 80 chance, could go down to 1 in 160, 320, 640, 1280, 2400.......... That's 100 days!

Well, I'm glad everyone's enjoying themselves.  It's definitely my most popular lock.
Of course, the lock I'm in will be open today, so I'm going to be out sooner than a lot of you.  :)

Out after 29 hours, very lucky, there were 5 double ups in the deck!
It's a good lock, scary, but good.
