Any Recommended Electronic Locks or Safe?
« on: June 26, 2018, 03:08:25 AM »
Greetings-

I'm a newbie to the site, and am reading up on the rules for how the key locked works, and I checked through the forums, but I didn't see a post on any recommended key safes that people use to lock away their keys, or if there was a lock that you could use that has an electronic key to set.  I'm in a Mature Metal Jail Bird, so I can use a lock if there is one, but I wanted to see what others use or any recommendations that you have.

Love that the app is now available on Apple, just downloaded it, but hoping to get some more info on how to proceed.  Thanks

I use a basic combination key box, like this (although I got mine from AliExpress.):
https://www.amazon.com/Nestling-Combination-Key-Lock-Box/dp/B017NHBKUG
I use an 8 digit combination from ChastiKey, with the first 4 being the starting combination, then the last 4 being modifiers; so a combination of 12345678, I'd set the lock to 1234, then turn the first dial by 5 digits, the second by 6 digits, etc.
Makes it harder to remember the combination for me.  I'm able to remember 4 digits easily, and 8 digits is not difficult, either, but for some reason splitting it into a pair of 4 digit combinations seems to give me a mental disconnect that works.

I also use a eletronic safe. The smaller ones cost about the same as a combination box...

And for the ones undecided, I'd recommend the eletronic safe as it takes 8 digits combinations.

Just saw one a few days ago around 20 EUR...

Getting those shipped to the EU must be astronomically cheaper than to Canada.  I keep seeing people say they paid about 20-25 EUR for one.  I've looked, and haven't managed to find one for less than ~$85 CAD, which is about $56 EUR.  Even AliExpress with shipping to Canada is in that ballpark.
My 4 digit lock box cost me under $22 CAD, so ~$14 EUR.  I'd love an 8 digit safe, but I'm not paying that kind of money for one.  Not when my wife's not into it.

@StagBullSwitch I considered buying one of these before I bought my safe. Not all of the sellers mention how many digits the combination can have and this one doesn't

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nestling%C2%AE-Outdoor-Cabinet-Security-Combination/dp/B00VNNL0JS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1530197595&sr=8-7&keywords=Wall+Mount+Key+Lock+Box

But a similar one on the Canada Amazon site says it can allow up to 3 to 10 digits:

https://www.amazon.ca/Box%EF%BC%8Cfiveaccy-10-Digit-Push-Button-Combination-Waterproof/dp/B077GT91JL/ref=sr_1_237?ie=UTF8&qid=1530197544&sr=8-237&keywords=electronic+safe

I have absolutely no idea how easy it is to use without any digital display to show what you've typed though especially with a long combination.

Just found this bit of text on one of those lockboxes I mentioned above

A ten-digit keypad means you can choose from numerous easy-to-remember, impossible-to-guess combinations. Passcodes can be three to ten digits long. The lock box kit includes instructions and a small tool to help in setting the passcode. Easy access for children, the elderly, or in low-light conditions. (Note: passcodes do not need to be entered in the correct sequence. For example, a passcode of 67890 can also be entered as 09876.)

It doesn't say if you can also unlock it with 86907. But being able to unlock it without typing it in the same sequence kind of makes it a bit useless.

I actually bought it in a physical hardware store. Was not an online deal. Ordering that from China would probably be more expansive (weight)...

Yes, I've seen those kind of lockboxes before.  It's basically a binary switch sequence, where the button for that number has to be either up or down.  So, it's not the order you enter it in, but whether that button has been pressed at all. You can think of it like a puzzle in a video game, where you've got 10 buttons, and some of them have to be down and some up in order to move to the next level.
Of course, that means you can't repeat digits, so most of the combinations that Chastikey generates would be useless.

I've seen them in local hardware stores, but never for less than $120.  And that was on sale.

Although, I've just looked on a local store's website, and they have one listed for $90. (Strangely, it's the same store that had the sale one for $120....)

Think I'll stick with my keybox, though.

Harbor freight or whatever is the equivalent in Canada though I can't remember the name should have some in the 25 to 40 range.

Oh, also, plastic devices will start to stink after a few days wearing them, they are not suitable for long-term wear. You need to go metal as the openings are larger and therefore easier to clean.
