Clarification on minimum time
« on: August 30, 2019, 06:55:56 PM »
Hi,

I've just stumbled across this app, and I'm extremely interested in experimenting with it and making use of it. I'm wondering if someone could help to please clarify how the "minimum duration" works? I've read the help section on the website that gives an example of setting minimum reds to 5, max to 10, and this would guarantee at least 5 hours (if hours are being used).

So, I plugged those settings into the app and it generated 9 red cards, 1 green card, and I see 10 cards on the screen. In order to guarantee the minumum term of 5, is the app in some way ensuring that the green card isn't picked at all for the first 5 guesses? The thing that slightly puzzles me is after making the first guess, the stats show a certain percentage chance of getting the green for the next guess, but surely this should be 0?

I think I've worked out the settings alright, I just want to be clear in my head the possibilities. What I'm looking to achieve is setting up a lock that is going to guarantee the guy is locked for a minimum term of 3 weeks (1 guess per day).

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

That is correct. If you set the minimum as 5 and the max as 10 then the app will stop you from finding the green for the first 5 hours (if hours was your setting). And it will give you between 5 and 10 red cards which is why you got 9.

This minimum option/feature will probably move to a separate option in the future so that it's a little clearer as it wasn't the easiest of things to explain in the help files.

If you want a minimum of 3 weeks and you're doing a daily variable locks then just set the minimum reds as 21 and the max as high as you want, the higher the max is though the harder it is to find the green card(s) to unlock so don't set the max as 300 odd if you only want to keep him locked for 3 to 5 weeks say.

The app shows at the bottom of the lock settings page a simulation based on the settings you chose which is a good indication of how long the lock might last if it was used for real.

I hope you enjoy using the app

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for such a quick response Kevin, that is very useful.

I think you've created a fantastic app here and I think I'll have some fun utilising it.

I agree that having the minimum option as a separate setting would probably be good, but I must say one of the things I like is that once you've set this parameter, it doesn't show anywhere on the lock. I therefore really love the thought that he'll think he's got a genuine chance on a daily basis, but I'll know that I've guaranteed at least 3 weeks.

I understand the other setting in terms of what the max time could be, and indeed I don't want to make it too long. That simulation feature is really great at will really help at determining what settings to choose. I've been very surprised when using that at how the average time comes out so close to the min/best time most of the time, and I would not have anticipated that. I guess it'll be fun to find out what the real total ends up being.

Thanks again.

I started with « variable » locks, and found the total time tends to resemble the number of red cards, completely REGARDLESS of the initial ESTIMATED time or the remaining number of cards.  Especially if/when I use double-up cards.  IOW the bots always release me WAY too early.  Hopefully the forthcoming « trust » option will fix this, and tend to at least resemble the average estimated time.

I’ve since moved on to « fixed » time locks (which the bots still adjust according to their whims) and the total locked time tends to resemble between the fixed time and twice the fixed time (with a « mean » bot) which is PERFECT.  I don’t really miss flipping cards.

IOW I strongly recommend the « fixed » locks !

That is how the bots work the time they keep you locked are based on the red card count. So you could have lots of each type of other card but if you don't have too many reds they're going to unlock you early. One thing I'm doing with the next version is passing the simulation data to the database when you create the lock so the bots could use the average time from that to calculate a time range that they'll keep you locked. Seems like a pretty good fix. And the trust option would give them permission to add the other cards that they can't add yet, and more reds and yellows etc.

I don't need to use the bots because I'm capable of being mean on my own :) Just to add my opinion to the above though, it sounds like using the average value would be a good way to do it, and I would say that a "mean bot" should be weighted on the side of going longer than the average, perhaps even the mid point between the average value and worst value on the simulation.
