ChastiKey shutdown timeline

I wanted to provide a timeline of things that will happen with the shutting down of the ChastiKey app. These may change slightly depending on other factors, but I would see timings being extended rather than brought forward.

- September 20th 2021: Deactivating of old versions of ChastiKey. All versions up to and including version 2.7.2. The reason for this is that older versions of the app don’t have the relevant code in them needed to help with the overall shut down. I’m doing this in the middle of the month because I will be away in the first week of October so won’t be able to give much time to dealing with problems that may occur from deactivating these versions. If you are using an old version that is deactivated you will need to update to the latest version available.
- November 1st 2021: Remove apps from both stores. You will still get updates if any are made after that date, but it’s unlikely updates would still be made from then.
- January 1st 2022 April 1st 2022: Deactivate the ability to create new locks. Any existing locks will still run as normal.
- February 1st 2022 May 1st 2022: Trigger an unlock for anyone still locked.
- March 2022 TBA: Shut down the ChastiKey app server (not this Discord server)

The last couple of items in the list above may change depending on progress of other apps because the plan is to offer the chance to transfer data over to any replacement app that allows it.

At some point after shutting down the app, the forum will probably be made read only as well.

There's a few apps being built by users of ChastiKey. Two should be available for testing within the next month or two.

All old versions of ChastiKey up to and including version 2.7.2 have now been deactivated. If you are using an old version you may find that it hangs on the loading screen. If so please check to see if you need to update. It should only affect a few 100 users out of about 18,000.

@KevinCross Just have to say one more time. Thank you for your time and dedication to Chastikey and also that your have given away the code so other new projects may look at the code and use parts or base their coding from it. So thank you from probably all of us who have used Chastikey over the years. So enjoy your "retirement" and let the "young ones" carry on the legacy.

ChastiSafe is currently the only one that is really useable at the moment, and the one with the most features available. The UI needs a lot of work still, but the developer is aware of that. Getting it to work is a higher priority.

A few people have asked if I would consider extending the planned ChastiKey shut down plan because most of the new apps aren’t properly available for testing yet. At the end of my last announcement I did mention that the dates may change depending on the progress of the new apps.

The original plan was to:

1. Disable the ability to create new locks on the 1st of January 2022,
2. Unlock everyone on 1st of February 2022.

For now the new plan will be:

1. Disable the ability to create new locks on the 1st of April 2022,
2. Unlock everyone on 1st of May 2022.

It wasn’t really the plan to remain running until one or more new app was in a final and stable release version, but hopefully by March/April one or more should at least be usable and going through different testing phases, and have the ability to transfer ChastiKey data/stats.

Here's a quick update on the 4 new apps being developed:

- ChastiSafe is currently the only useable service, and the one with the most available features.
- TheLockBoxApp has some functionality like creating fixed locks, but the functionality of unlocking (or revealing the combination) is currently missing. They have pencilled in the 12th of December for their next testing phase where you’d be able create and load variable locks.
- Chastilock sounds like it’s mostly done, with some features still being worked on. The developers said that they will soon start uploading the app to the Play Store and App Store to start the review process.
- ChastiLife is still being developed and the developer told me that they hope to have something available for testing some time in January.
